Between The Buried And Me: Colors

04/09/07  ||  Euthanatos

Between the Buried and Me came to the world with an atrocious self-titled debut and followed up with an uninspired sequel, “Silent Circus”, which should have been just that..Silent. That should have been enough to write them off for good, but they surprised the world with the awesome “Alaska”, an album that was quite near perfection and totally adequate for all those who missed a Cynic clone that had a little flavor and spice.

Fortunately for me, and for us all, the new album, “Colors”, is every bit as good as “Alaska”. You may be frightened by the beginning, the album being introduced by a soft keyboard and voice Radiohead sounding first track. Fear not, and away with you non-believer, “Foam Born: (b) The Decade of Statues” brings things back to tech-death bliss. Growling vocals with intricate bass and guitar passages, pretentious jazz metal at its best.

There’s something for everyone here; the prog metal fan, the death metal fan, the technical, the jazz, the math, the power…wait, I got carried away. Truth is, Between the Buried and Me have a terrible name, but they have mastered their art and are absolutely amazing at what they do.

“Colors” is even richer in terms of moods and different moments than “Alaska”. The musicianship performed here is astounding. And what amazes me the most is that the album doesn’t have one track that feels awkward, different from the others. Everything fits just right, like one, uninterrupted song, a full-blown death orchestra. Great fast riffs, blast-beats, breakdowns, jazzy parts, desperate vocals that blend into clean, ethereal vocals. Ah, the delight.

Seriously, this is one gay review, but it is indeed fulfilling to finally listen to a band that creates huge expectations and truly delivers when the time comes.

Sure, these guys will forever carry the “Cynic wannabes” burden, but fuck, if they do it so perfectly, what’s wrong with that? At least they’re copying a kick-ass band.

This is highly, highly recommended.

The cover: It’s an actually very interesting architectural project-like art. Different and cool, reminds me of the seventies.

9 veils of maya out of 10.
